Message from the Board:
We now have instituted the quarterly meeting. Our next meeting will be in March of 2012. At that event we will have a pot-luck supper and a program presented by Eileen Hazel on the 30's and 40's in Cortland.
We are also waiting for the sale of the museum and it's contents. It will be a great opportunity to buy a piece of history from the Viets House.
Photographic history of Cortland book seeking photos.
Sally Lane is compiling a photographic history of Cortland and Bazetta for Arcadia publishing. She is looking for pictures earlier than 1961. All photos will be scanned and returned. If you can contribute you can contact her at 330-307-3258 or editor@thecortlandnews.com
November's Civil War Tales

L to R: Di Matijevic, Don VanMeter, Mr. Fairchild, Carolyn Sparhawk, and Mary Lou Reese.
The Cortland-Bazetta Historical Society celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with two programs in November. The first was a colorful and educational presentation by Don VanMeter of North Jackson, founder and commander of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Re-enactors group. Dressed in authentic Yankee officer regalia, VanMeter told a nice crowd at the Opera House about real reasons for the Civil War and the social and political atmosphere of the times. He also told of the connection of the Masons to the war and explained the symbolism of the Confederate flag.
The Cortland-Bazetta Historical Society has plans to participate in the Civil War commemoration throughout the coming year.

After the society's annual covered dish dinner on Nov. 10, member-historian Harry Schoger (above) gave an enlightening presentation on the part Ohio and Trumbull County played in the Civil War.

After the Thanksgiving feast our president, Carol Caronite, gave a brief talk on the current events of the Historical Society and our plans for the future.
Di Matijevic is the membership chair for the historical society. She can be reached at 330-637-2717. Bill Hallet is the editor of the Gazette and can be reached at 330-637-2731.
